Pigmentation
Pigmentation Treatment in Lane End | Opia Radiance Skin Specialist
Pigmentation is a common skin concern that can present as uneven skin tone, dark patches or areas of discolouration. While often considered a cosmetic issue, pigmentation can be complex and requires a considered, long-term approach to treat effectively.
Treating pigmentation is not about quick fixes, but about consistency, protection and understanding the skin at a deeper level. With the right approach, it is possible to achieve a clearer, brighter and more even-looking complexion over time. Each treatment plan is carefully tailored to your skin type, pigmentation type and overall skin health to ensure optimal results.
A Realistic & Responsible Approach
Certain types of pigmentation, particularly hormone-related pigmentation such as melasma, can be more complex and challenging to treat. While improvements can often be achieved with professional skin treatments and consistent home care, more advanced intervention — such as laser therapy — may sometimes be required. Where appropriate, you will be referred to a trusted specialist to ensure you receive the most effective and responsible treatment for your skin.
What Causes Pigmentation?
Pigmentation is rarely caused by one single trigger. It is typically the result of various internal and external influences, including:
• Sun exposure and UV damage
• Hormonal changes (including melasma)
• Inflammation or post-acne marks
• Skin trauma or over-treatment
• Certain medications or health factors
What are the different types of Pigmentation?
Melasma
Melasma appears as brown or grey-brown patches, most commonly on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip.
• Often triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes or genetics
• More common in women and typically appears symmetrically
• Can be persistent and requires ongoing management
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
PIH develops as dark marks following skin inflammation or injury.
• Common after acne, eczema or skin trauma
• Appears as pink, red, brown or darker patches
• Usually fades over time but can take several months without treatment
Hypopigmentation
Hypopigmentation presents as lighter patches of skin due to reduced melanin.
• Caused by skin damage, inflammation or certain conditions
• Areas appear paler than the surrounding skin
• May be temporary or permanent depending on the cause
Hyperpigmentation
Is a general term for areas of skin that become darker than the surrounding tone.
• Caused by excess melanin production
• Triggers include sun exposure, hormones, inflammation and ageing
